Abd al-Muttalib1 promised that, should he have ten children and discover

them all men around him, he would forfeit one of them at the Kaʿba out of

appreciation for the [pagan] god. When every one of his children had

developed to the age of ten, he told them:

“Sons, I made a pledge of which

you know. What do you need to say?” The decision is yours,” they said. “We

are all in your hands.”Let every one of you take his bolt,” ʿAbd al-Muttalib

stated, “and compose his name on it.”They did as such and gave him the

bolts. At that point ʿAbd al-Muttalib gathered the man liable for projecting

the bolts [as divination] and gave him their bolts, letting him know: “Shake

them slowly.”ʿAbd Allah was the child dearest to him. The man cast the

bolts, and it was ʿAbd Allah’s bolt that came out. ʿAbd al-Muttalib took an

extraordinary blade and brought ʿAbd Allah and had him lie between the

two Quraish symbols, Isaf and Naʾila.2 But as he was going to kill him, the

kid’s sibling Abu Talibleaped in and remained his dad’s hand. When the

Abu Makhzoum, who were ʿAbd Allah’s maternal uncles, known about this,

they all came irately to ʿAbd al-Muttalib.”We will not permit you,” they

stated, “to kill our nephew. Proceed to kill whomever you wish from your

other kids.”
